Her step backwards surprises him, and for a moment, he simply stands there blinking. But she isn't yelling at him, isn't slamming the door in his face. She'd responded to the kiss in a way that makes it clear that he hadn't been misreading all of this. It doesn't matter that they aren't from the same moment in time. Not when those feelings aren't foreign to either of them.
"Sorry for waking you up." It's a quiet murmur, the silence of the world around them sinking in enough to have him keep the volume down. It's still the middle of the night, regardless of the fact that the two of them are awake now. So it stands to reason that they should probably move this inside. Which he does, after a few moments deliberation, stepping far enough in to her apartment to close the door behind them.
With the outside cut off though, wariness kicks in, and while a part of him wants nothing more than to continue where they left off, he can't help but hesitate this time. He really has no idea how welcome this is. Whether she responded because she was caught off-guard, because she was tired. Whether there are actual feelings there, or whether it's simply a pack thing.
Whether it's because he's an alpha.
(No, it can't be that. He refuses to believe it's that. Malia is more than capable of making those choices, no matter who he is.)
...he's thinking too hard about all this. He knows it. It's just a little difficult to push past it all when he still doesn't know when she's from. Doesn't know whether--
"Do you remember us?" A rushed question, and one he knows he shouldn't be posing like that. Not when it may be something she hasn't lived through yet.
Malia didn't necessarily want to stop, but if Scott wants to talk, they can talk, and that tiny detail is something she'd been curious about. She'd known what she had been planning to do, if they ever got out of the Argent bunker alive. But she hasn't gotten to that point yet, as her wish had brought her to Cadelle and to a Scott that hadn't known her before she had the opportunity to try.
But Scott is clearly past that, to the point where they're an "us" and she isn't entirely sure how to respond at first, because she doesn't want this to stop. She doesn't want Scott to do the good guy thing and run away until she catches up. Not when he's already here.
But she's not going to lie to him either.
"No." She pauses for a moment, as she tries to figure out how to make that answer better. "But I wanted there to be."
He doesn't need to listen to her heartbeat. Doesn't need any kind of confirmation that she's telling the truth. If there's one thing that Malia is known for, it's her bluntness. She doesn't have a reason to lie, even to him. So her words are enough to have him relax. To have an easy smile appear on his face as he recloses the space between them.
"And now?" It's a soft question, his intentions clear in the way he keeps himself only inches from continuing where they left off moments ago. But it's the one thing left that he needs to ask. Being in a city like this, he knows it wouldn't be fair to expect anything from her. She's been here long enough now to form attachments, to get close to others.
It complicates thing, but as far as Scott's concerned, he won't let it be a restriction. He cares too much about her to allow it to be.
There hasn't really been. She and Baby would spoon sometimes, and she and Thea had a moment, but they're more friends than anything. The only person she's actually had feelings for is Scott. She gives a small shrug in return, because while Malia is a healthy girl with a healthy sex drive, this between them was different.
"I still want it." And then, just to clarify, because Stiles taught her that verbal consent is important. "Do you?"
